The California Ag Leadership Foundation is Transforming the Future of Agriculture
Michelle Paul with her daughter, showing the next generation true leadership in Ag.
After attending my most recent California Ag Leadership Foundation Board of Directors (BOD) meeting, I felt compelled to share my experience. Having served on the BOD for just a year, this meeting was particularly impactful as it coincided with the commencement of Class 53, which also included Impact Portfolio Presentations, the final component of the fellowship.
Witnessing these individuals' transformation firsthand solidified my deep admiration for the California Ag Leadership Foundation (CALF) and its mission. Seeing their growth and hearing their stories reaffirmed my belief in the power of personal leadership development and strengthened my commitment to supporting programs that cultivate strong, values-driven leaders in our industry.
Transforming Tomorrow's Leaders
The California Ag Leadership Program (CALP) is a 17-month immersive experience designed to push participants beyond their comfort zones, fostering leadership, advocacy, and community impact. Sitting through the Impact Portfolio Presentations, I was deeply moved by the recurring themes of transformation, self-awareness, and resilience.
Each fellow reflected on their journey—who they were before the program, the obstacles they encountered, and the clarity they gained. From overcoming imposter syndrome to recognizing vulnerability as a strength, their stories demonstrated the profound and lasting effects of this program.

Key Takeaways from Class 53 Fellows
While each fellow's journey was unique, common themes emerged that underscore the value of this program:
Embracing Vulnerability as a Leadership Strength – Fellows now see vulnerability not as a weakness but as a tool for building trust and stronger connections with peers, family, and colleagues.
Rediscovering Confidence and Purpose – Many participants spoke about how the program reignited their self-confidence, helping them reclaim abilities and leadership qualities they felt had been lost.
Cultivating Open-Mindedness and Empathy – Through challenging discussions and diverse experiences, fellows expanded their perspectives, becoming more understanding and thoughtful in their interactions.
Strengthening Personal Relationships – Some fellows reflected on how the program reshaped their priorities, providing clarity that allowed them to navigate significant life events with greater awareness and purpose.
Committing to Lifelong Growth and Learning – Fellows emphasized their dedication to ongoing self-reflection and professional development, ensuring that they continue evolving as leaders.
Gaining a Broader Global Perspective – The program's international component provided exposure to different cultures and agricultural systems, deepening fellows' understanding of global challenges and opportunities.

The Ripple Effect of Leadership Development
What struck me most was the ripple effect this program has—not just on the fellows themselves but on their teams, organizations, and communities. Leadership is about more than individual growth; it's about bringing others along, advocating for change, and creating lasting impact.
Each fellow left the program with a clear vision of how they will apply their leadership skills—whether by mentoring young professionals, strengthening sustainability initiatives, or shaping the future of agricultural policy. Their passion was undeniable, and their commitment to serving the industry with integrity was inspiring.
How You Can Get Involved
As we look to the future, the California Ag Leadership Foundation is now accepting applications for Class 55. If you—or someone you know—are ready to elevate your leadership, expand your impact, and be part of a transformational experience, I strongly encourage you to apply.

Final Reflections
Reflecting on my experience attending Class 53's Impact Portfolio Presentations, I am reminded of why leadership development in agriculture matters. Strong leaders drive innovation, champion sustainability, and ensure the resilience of our food systems.
To the fellows of Class 53—congratulations! Your journey is just beginning, and the industry is stronger because of your commitment to growth and service. To those considering applying—take the leap. This program builds leaders, and in turn, those leaders change the industry.
I'm honored to have the opportunity to see this program's impact firsthand, and I look forward to seeing how these leaders shape the future of agriculture.
